Yes, it is,
All lutenist I've meet are former rock or classical guitarist coverted
to lute.
Once you play lute for the first time is no way back.. is like Windows
and Macintosh :) ... but the comparison si far away to be exact...

as noted earlier, if someone can produce passable violins at $300, and
lord knows there are plenty of cheap but OK guitars around, it escapes
me why there are not cheap but OK lutes in the marketplace.
