Google "Spectra fishing line" very strong, highly stretch resistant. Another
high strength, low stretch fiber is "DYNEEMA" (high modulus polyethylene
fiber) "Spectra" might actually be this stuff, different brand names and
formulations for different applications. Fishing line seems to be the m
27;s best to try the graphite treatment first.

I have found it necessary to tie a 'leader' onto unexpectedly shortened
strings and finding that, surprisingly, it does seem to stabilize
tuning problems. I have always used well-stretched bits of slightly
thicker-gauged used gut or fret gut, since it seems to find its point
of stabi
dacron or nylon; those
still crop up for occasion applications, but are very different things.)
Best,
Eugene

I'd just like to chime in on the knot. I've found the barrel knot
works best for me, i.e. doesn't break or slip. Unfortunately it
requires 3 1/2 hands, just like soldering.
To get on or off this list see list information at
http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
Blood knot is nice, true, but it creates bulks from both - the string and the
leader. The beauty of using a thinner leader (may be synthetic) and a knot that
wraps that leader around a thicker body of the string, is that there is hardly
any bulk, and the knot does not get caught against the othe
f the inherent stiffness of
gut strings.
Best,
Eugene
