You are partially correct. If you have a lute in g, and the mensur could
be anywhere fro57 to 64 cm, of course you would vary the string
diameter. But, if the instrument is set up correctly and pitched near the
top breaking point for the treble string, the diameter will be closely the
same.

If one has an alto lute in a at 50 cm, or a lute in E at 66 cm, the same
treble string will basically work well, if the proportions are correct.
Dear Edward,
I thought we had to change the diameter of the strings according to the
string
Dear Bruno,
The example you give is for two different length lutes being tuned to
the same pitch.
The short treble lute in the recent discussion is not being tuned to the
same pitch as a tenor (something like a g), but rather to a c or d above
that.
Someone suggested imagining taking a

Rereading your note...Just measure from your bridge to 37 centimeters and see
what fret it lands on. Maybe an e flat?

I always lose count of the apostrophes. Do you mean a C: a tone below the
standard descant (D) lute? If so, I

Sean,
Thanks for your help. But I'm not following you. If I measure from my
bridge...? ...you mean on a lute with 60ms string length?
Here's how I see it, Stuart. In general, if you want to raise the
pitch on a given string you have two choices: make the vibrating length
shorter or use a string of smaller mass. Since the breaking tension
remains constant regardless of length and we tend to tune the highest
string
I am jumping in on this thread. Sean is correct. For the most part,
one generally uses the same diameters in viel-tuned lutes, regardless of
the length.
