This is a bug that I found using LyX 1.1.6fix1 with GNU debian Woody.
Just try to make this
1) Enter Math mode, for example M+m+d
2) Just create a fraction with M+m+f
3) type in the upper part "g_1 SPACE ^n_1 SPACE SPACE"
that is: g with "1" as subscript and "n_1" (n subscript 1) as supers
