I realised that the problem is not related to network drives but to path names
containing German "Umlaute".
If the path name of a LyX file contains an Umlaut, LyX will claim that the file
has been externally modified whenever I try to save it.

then I get emph, but also english language. My document is
in norwegian, so this is most unwelcome.
The current workaround is to revert the language using
the textstyle dialog. :-(
