Lyx crapping out on MDK8.1

Hi folks, I have recently started using Lyx, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. It works quite well on my HPUX box at work, but, infortunately, it is well poorly behaved on my Mandrake 8.1 box at home: here are the symptoms: 1) mathed-superscripts are inlined instead of going where they should. 2)
