tgif is a great vector graphic program for creating simple eps figures http://bourbon.usc.edu:8001/tgif/ I finally figured out how to use tgif to easily generate eps figures with complex LaTeX math embedded. tgif can display / position / modify the WYSIWYG equation and the LyX math editor
