Richard: I tried erasing the ~/.lyx dir, but nothing changes, same behavior. I forgot to mention that the default ui I get is with three toolbars (Standard, View/Update, Extra), two of which, however, are almost completely hidden (see picture below). So it looks like it's some configuration problem
