Hi -
I am a new M102 owner, but have a collection of other TRS-80s (M1 & M4). I
recently acquired this M102 on eBay, and as disclosed it has a "black
screen" on startup. The following is what I have done so far, none of which
has changed the situation. I would appreciate any and all additional
Sounds great will do. Steve

Hey Stephen,
I had sent you a private mail indicating that I also wanted one but not sure if
you received it. Please let this be my formal request. :D
Thanks,
Kevin

I want to thank you, James Zeun and others for helping me with information
related to the DVI!
Now all I need is to find some of the neat hardware that you mentioned
earlier!
Say, since it seems that the main creator for these object has passed away,
has anyone else taken up the torch for
They sometimes look OK until you remove them and the leads fall off :)
After 35years they are well past their life expectancy and are probably not
performing anywhere close to their specs.
Usually you can see visible corrosion around the area of the cap where they
have outgassed and eaten into
On the list! May have enough nowwill check.
I have 25 units ready now.

Exactly what I was going to say
I did a video a year or so ago showing how to replace the capacitors. In the
video description in a link to a parts list and color-coded map on which caps
go were.. If this is not something you want to tackle yourself myself and a few
other list members do
Hello, sadly I missed out completely on my chance to order my texcpm
hardware!
Is there any chance to get in line for it still?
Is anyone building more hardware out there?
Thanks, Louis

Any of those you pictured is good. The pla is the weakest but still
probably OK depending on the exact design of the part. abs, asa, petg
all definitely good.
I haven't looked at the model in question, but, to make a working
battery cover in general, you don't always have to *exactly* copy

Very common problem ³generally" caused by bad electrolytic caps on the -5V
output line. The -5V is used to provide the contrast voltage for the LCD
so when it fails the screen will fade out. If you recap the board it
should go some way to fixing the problem. It will also help the +5V line
too
Sounds like a tell-tale sign of -5v (Vee) instability. Basically, replace:
- C82
- C84
- C85
and re-test from there.

It could just be a dirty variable resistor, Try contact cleaner on it.

When the display comes on I see the normal text a M100 would show, the list of
files.
I have tried the cold reset procedure (control break reset) and it doesn’t
bring the display back.
HOWEVER, I just tried something now, which is even after the display fades out,
I hit enter, I type BEEP and
I am going to make some changes to the M200 battery cover model based on the
earlier suggestions here, so don’t order one just yet. I’m also happy to print
them for people who don’t have a printer as long as they cover the postage cost.
