Making the PCB is easy (but probably expensive). I don't know if anyone makes
a push-push switch anymore for the caps lock key, so you might need to
replicate that with a flip-flop and LED.

are plenty of originals out there, plus C64 Reloaded and
Ultimate64, which I think both have some good advantages. If

modification of the data, it’s the lack of user visibility and
control. My suggestion would be to make it a checkbox that’s
enabled
by default.

Desoldering the battery isn’t a big deal. Start by clipping it
