before *any* update big or small. that montra has saved me about a few hundred
hours of pulling out my hair in screaming frustration.

Sorry to sound like a broken old record here, but the usual recommendation
applies. Make, and retain, a current full backup of your system. Use
something like Super Duper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to accomplish this.
That way, you'd know whether the update breaks anything and, if it does
