The dialog I got was something on the order of a message telling me that if I
chose to delete the item, it would be removed from iTunes permanently, and
would no longer be able to sync with other devices. I apologize for the very
poor representation of the dialog, but I was not asked
When you press delete, you should be presented with a dialogue asking if you
want to send the track to the trash or keep it in the itunes library. Sending
it to the trash will do just that, and it will disappear forever when you empty
the trash.

Focus on the track you want to delete in the music table and press the
backspace/delete key. The track will be gone.
You can highlight multiple tracks and delete them all at one time as well.
You can delete tracks directly from the music table by pressing delete.
