Ok Phil - mouse clicking works in the preferences. Thanks. I still need confirmation as to if the preinstalled version of GarageBand only comes with the software piano, and if other instruments need to be downloaded, and if so, how can I get to where I can instigate the download, and if not, how

Hmm. I successfully use gb with out the troubles you are having. and very successfully I might add for the jingles I had to produce last year. I can vo space on the prefs tool bar and r works for me when I'm using my piano key board. Also the app store or software update will dl the instrument

I use GB primarily for audio recording - not so much software synths. it is highly accessible for audio recording, although a little weird at first. To load a different synth in your software track, you need to uninteract with everything and get to the top level. Then open the info pane with co
