According to this tech note (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775), Target Display mode
will not work with a "mere" Mini-Display port

So it sounds like unless I come across a 27" mdPort (non-Thundebolt) iMac, I'm
going to need to get a thunderbolt cable.
