The cairo port in MacPorts already does build for each architecture separately
and then glue them together using lipo. In MacPorts this feature is called the
muniversal portgroup. Based on what I've seen, cairo just does not appear to
like building for x86_64 on Leopard. (I don't have an Intel L

Hi Everyone,
Many thanks for all the help. Things are up and working, including xfig.
In case anyone is interested (or at least for my own records), here is my
guess as to what happened.
(1) I loaded coreutils and findutils and xfig on an older MacBook
(2) I copied the file /opt/local/bin/gdat

Understood. I'm hoping some other user can at least tell me whether
they see similar behavior or not.
The error message you received suggests you file a bug report

Hi John,
Nobody, said that MacPort is completely bug free. But, it is not a
buggy system anymore.
Some of its problem are part of a complicated system of port
distribution. The system is getting better and better.
There is no fool proof system for the work what MacPorts d
Hi Ryan,
The problem is that the Tex-Live is a static system as such. The
binaries do seem to change for
year to year. At least as far as I have noticed.
But, many of the Tex…-packages are updated regulary. Such as
polyglossia for example.

Dear Folk,
There is nothing more to be said. Incidentally, I have never used Fink
for the exact reason I saw many folk complaining about the excruciating
problems they experienced.
As to volunteering, my hot shot coding days are long past. I'm doing

Hi John,
Nobody, here has anything against questions or questioning policy,
but you are definately wrong in stating that MacPorts is a "buggy
software scheme".
Quite the contrary is true. Have you used Fink? Fink has in the past

Hi All,
Though the MacPort experts, may disagree with me,
I would never suggest migrating MacPorts!
I always start MacPorts out with a fresh install on any new machine
or new major OS version. It saves a lot of headaches.
The only thing you loose is time in
Hi Dan,
First off. I just use the MacTeX distribution directly.
