They do have a protector but you don’t need it. It’s an entirely sealed unit

Before the Intel Macs, there used to be a Numloc key on a laptop keyboard, but
this is no longer the case. There may be a utility out there somewhere to do
this, but I don’t know of any.
External numeric keypads aren’t expensive and would do the job.

You know, since El Capitan, I've not really needed to do it, so I'm not
completely sure. Things have slightly changed from Yosemite to now.
