Trouble seeing External Drives

Hi, all. I have a mid 2015 MacBook Pro that seems to be having trouble seeing external drives. When I plug a drive into either of the USB ports, it tells me the desktop which is where drives usually appear is empty. This doesn’t happen all the time, but it does seem to be happening more often.
