For me it can take up to 3 minutes but I'm on what feels like a dial down
connection. lol!

I have the same problem. In fact it happened to me a few seconds ago before
reading this message. Quite a coincidence really.
I think it's maybe a problem with Gmail being slow as sometimes I have it when
Mail crashes when I try to delete a load of messages at once.
