Try the pass port family, I just purchased one 2 gigs from western digital if memory serves me right it was around $149.00 It supports USB 3.0, but not thunderbolt still plenty fast and not a major costly drive. i've been using an HD with 2 drives set up to duplicate each other. if one fails you are supposed to remove the bad one and the other will be duplicated on the new one. this procedure failed when my WD drive failed and WD no longer had one of that size! i wound up paying a technician to rescu

I bought a LaCie 2tb external drive from the apple store. It is both USB and Firewire800, and can be used as an external boot drive. This model (2tb) is no longer made, but LaCie is good stuff, and Apple sells it in their stores. It's good to have a combo drive USB/Firewire, so you can use it as
