Hello Edward, After countless hours of using Yosemite Mail, on two Macs, one being a ventage 2009 model and the other recently purchased, I can tell you that I have never lost Message Column item focus in Mail when in Standard View. Rarely do I use Classic view, anymore, so cannot comment on
