First, yes, you really need one.
Second, I'm using ClamXAV and have had no issues at all. It costs
nowadays, but, it's quite nice in the accessibility department and I'd
recommend it. Without knowing which one caused you the trouble, however, it's
a little hard to make recommendations
Hi, I've been using Sophos Free Antivirus for the last year and really
like it. Its very accessible with VO. I used to use virus barrior
express from the app store but it froze and crashed a lot.

company because I do not want to trash them . It may only be a conflict that I
am having . Like I said I had no problem with them until the upgrade .. The
