By default, VO will read the notifications you get, assuming you haven't disabled the Messages app in your Notification Center. This only speaks a few words, but it is enough to let you know who sent the message and that it is waiting for you to view. I think there might be a setting in the pref

Just hit cmd-n and start typing the name. If the person is in your contacts, they will be auto-filled, just like typing an email recipient. If not, type the Apple Id or phone number of the person instead. Move to the next text field, type your message, and press enter. I'm not sure what you mean
