this iPhone was originally associated with a mobile provider, given to
me by a colleague who had no further use for the device. In Canada
mobile providers are required to unlock devices for free..although they
did try to lock the phone to themselves

My iPhone is unlocked (bought outright from Apple, not as a carrier device,
hence not locked to a specific carrier). All I needed to do was to install a
SIM card (transferred the card from the previous iPhone), contacted the
carrier, gave them the IMEI number as I recall, and it was working on
as a word processor or note taking device then
notepad and or pages etc are all free to an Ios device these days.
