audio quality problems using esd daemon

I am developing a sound application for Diablo. I am having audio quality problems when I use non standard audio sample rates such as 32000 Hz. I have a high quality sample rate converter and when I use this to convert to 44100 it sounds like it should. If I use 32000 Hz it has a raspy sound. I am
