Well it is a bit misleading when the rootstrap link in the tutorial [1]
is pointing at the minimal rootstrap [2].
Perhaps somebody could fix (and test) the tutorial ;)

Hi,
No key-press (or release) events are produced by the virtual keyboard to
the main window, so no wonder you're not getting them ;) The keyboard
itself is a standalone process with it's own window (AFAIK).
But, the text is committed to the entry through the IMContext API. My
suggestions for you

AFAIK,
gtk_im_context_reset (YourGtkIMContext);
should not hide anything, but only reset the state of the inputmethod.

There are several ways to disable the virtual keyboard, this is one that
I would prefer:
You can edit the file /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules and comment the two
lines with the name hildon attached to them (keep the X Input Method in
place though).
