of MapGuide Studio. Hopefully I will have better luck.

There is a process that handles MapGuide requests, that is called
"MapAgent.exe", but you should not encounter that one from WebStudio.
Previews do not work inside WebStudio, if you don't have the PHP API.

What webserver? What API did you choose.
Did you install 1.2 RC2, 1.1, Enterprise or another version?
Does the Site Administrator work?
What URL do you type in the MapGuide Studio "Connect" dialog?
