Hi,
I don't think that it's possible to automatically pick up multiple directories
in one pass.
You can make an XML version of the RIC using the utility posted on this page:
https://trac.osgeo.org/fdo/wiki/FdoGdalNotes#CreatingTileIndexConfigFiles
