Maybe I am in the minority, but so far Mapinfo 6.5 and my XP are doing fine.
I have 128 RAM; P4/1.2ghz.
I do not know if Mapinfo is 100% XP certified. Maybe ver. 7.0

Does anybody know whether there are any implications for users of MapInfo
6.5 and/or MapBasic 6.5 and not having administrative rights on the
computer? Would like to know for future users who will need to be set up on
these apps.
Cheers,

I can't answer your question, but you should look up your
license agreement to make sure you are allowed to use it the
way you intend. The standard license says you can't use it
the way you state (even if it's technically possible) unless
you have purchased additional licenses - see section 2.
Dan: What you're seeing is almost assuredly a Bounds problem.
Export 2 files in MIF/MID format, the problem TAB file and a TAB file that correctly
displays at least roughly the same geographic area as the problem TAB file. Open both
of the MIFs in a word processor as text files (I prefer

New machine pre-installed with XP, right? Not an upgrade from Win98?

It is not certified for XP.
Hello Darren,
Could you expand on what Section 2 of the EULA does not permit users with
less than Admin privileges? There are no doubt thousands of corporate users
in the world who fall into this category as companies lock down their
workstations to prevent the casual installation of software. I
I did not have any problem regarding MapInfo6.5/ WinXP

Hello,
I knew this was going to draw some questions after I hit

one else thinks I was accusing him of intentionally doing
anything wrong - I was simply making sure that he thought
about it before doing it. I'm also far from an expert on
Well to help clarify it even more. I was only asking this question purely
on the basis of how Windows NT and MapInfo work together. I was just making
sure that there were no implications of setting the users privileges on the

Greetings Bill: My organization is assessing what an upgrade from NT4 to XP would
mean to the software we currently use, and what that might mean to our work practices.
Problems between MapInfo and XP would mean a more intensive review of my work
practices and what would be needed to make sure
I have no plans to upgrade from Win98 and Win2000 to XP, because
I see no compelling reason to do so, and several reasons not to.
Why, exactly, do people feel they now must upgrade? I hope the
reason isn't because everyone else is or Microsoft says so. I
see XP as a big, fat, expensive threat to
All,
We too are about to embark on the thrilling adventures of upgrading from NT4
to XP, so from the general feeling is it doesn't sound too promising but
then maybe it does.
Does anyone have experience or had incidents with MapBasic or VB programs
written on the NT platform and not working on
On Tuesday of this week, I had a partner's table at an all day Microsoft

impressive capabilities of MapPoint.
I'm sure there is no connection between this new emphasis on Microsoft
mapping and the current thread on
Bill I am impress that you pointed out PostgreSQL instead of MySQL.

Considering that XP is actually a point release (W2k is 5.0 XP is
5.1)... If it runs on 2k it should run on XP. The only issue
that might
happen is with the crayola puck GUI skinning, but you can
turn that off.
Ok I do not want to start a flame war but...
Linux was started in the early 90's as a project to port the educational
OS MINIX to a 386 platform. Linux initally was not POSIX compliant...
Just POSIX like. 35 years of development and or history would be the
BSD or the SVR4 branches of UNIX.
I am fully aware of Linux's origins. Originally a port of MINIX to i386
with some feature enhancement, it now has some parts from SysV, some from
BSD.
My point was not that Linux has a 35 year history, but that the generic UNIX
OS concept (which encompases Linux, *BSD, BSD4.4, SunOS/Solaris,
So that some of us can take away something useful from this (and not just

I have MapInfo 6.5 set up on my Win2000 machine have no problem changing

I like many, are finding it hard to upgrade on OS every 2 years!
That said, I and several others have upgraded to XP on new machines either
just purchased or that we had enough knowledge to put together.
XP does have many advantages over earlier versions, and it will just like

The New XP Explorer has a XML processor in it so you can change your GUI

The brightly colored 'Toothpaste' theme that is standard on XP (The Big

this file to the GUI. You load the 'classic'

I recently bought an HP Pavilion 7950 with ME installed. I like HP. I've

The 7950 came with WinME. Both my vendor and HP said and supplied what I
needed to have to upgrade to XP. Delivery of those supplies took about a

Well, I tried your solution on some software (including MS Access- importing problems under XP) using the compatibility feature. It works! How nice of MS. Ensuring backwards compatibility in an upgrade is a sign that a software developer cares about its customers.

Hey, thanks to all of you for your suggestions on getting me plotting again.
AGAIN it is - I just plotted the most beautiful map, rasters on the bottom,
seven layers of drawings on top and not one single big black blob!

If the problem was just MI or XP, then the cost would be reasonable. It is
all the other stuff that you have to upgrade. I estimate that it would cost
