John MI actually seems to translate the files rather than read them on the fly. It creates a .tab, .id, .ind and .map file and uses the shape files .dbf instead of the .dat file. I'm not sure whether any linking exists between the files (i.e. if the shape gets edited is the MapInfo table updated ?
