functional database you need to shutdown the system and backup the fil

This depends on where you datafiles are - and it also depends if you're
using 7.3 or greater. 7.3 stores it'

This is not really a good idea with a database that is
currently running. The backup software will only be able
to capture each file a few chunks at a time
