Screen gone black

After trying MC and having it run fine (other than the line drawing characters), something has gone wrong.   I have rerun ./configure, make, and make install.  Same problem.   When I start mc, the screen goes BLACK and the cursor blinks at the bottom of the screen.  I can't find any way to

Line drawing using wrong characters

I have MC running in a console - so far so good.   The line drawing is not using the right characters - it is using strange characters (>chr(127)).  I do I force it to use the right characters/font?   In my shell, I have LANG=en_US (so that the man pages would show the right characters).

I just installed the latest midnight commander on Fedora Core 4, using the RPM.  All went great   I am ssh'd into my linux box.  When I run mc from the command line, it always tries to start an xwindows session.  Is there a way to force mc to run in console mode only? __
