With star, I mean the Schilly tar, available from Jörg Schilly at

another approach? If the filename does not already start
with a / (and thus is a full path) or starts with ~, prepend a ./ before
the filename. Also don't prepend ./ if the filename starts with ftp://
and the like. Shouldn't this work?

:\Programme, in a german windows at least. In an English Windows, it'll
install to C:\Program Files, and obviously German and English programs can
ask Windows where the 'PROGRAM FILES' directory is.
Isn't that what we're talking about here as well?

No, if the dir isn't there, it should be created on-the-fly. If someone
dislikes the defaults, he should change em thru Control Center.
