It's not background noise, it's being sent to the output of your sound card.
All sounds go to the line out and digital out of your sound card as well as
to the speaker output. You have to be sure not to do other things while
recording music. Be sure and quit your email program too so it doesn't
TRy double clicking the volume control. This brings up a bigger, bore elaborate
volume control. Click options, in the menu bar, properties, and under playback,
disable any inputs you aren't using. It might help.

The track mark button on the remote only works when recording. During
playback, you have to mark tracks with the T-mark button
