I am currently shopping for my first minidisc player. I want to get a portable
player/recorder so I can do everything right away and then get a deck for my stereo
system eventually. Does anybody have any suggestions? I don't want to spend more

My recomendation is for the MZ-R37. It has a lot going for it. The R55 is
a nice and small unit, but it suffers from very short battery life.
