web user would have to be able to read/write the temp directory, not the
maintenance user (Except when doing maintenance work. So really both need

I once had a situation where CSS (in MediaWiki:Common.css) was positioning
another element (masthead) at the top of the page, and obscuring (z-index)
the auto-complete text that should have shown in the text box. It's a
stretch, but if you're not getting any errors, then maybe the text *is
there*
Nothing I can think of trying (or ideas found online) has made any difference.
I am not defining the tmp directory, so it's the default (although I did try
defining it myself directly and got errors). I couldn't see a /tmp folder in
the root, so I tried creating one with the proper permissions,
