I use DynamicPageList[1] on my Main Page to show users a top 10 of recent edits.
You could do multiple lists for different categories/namespaces, sort by last
edit/create timestamp/etc, all sorts of options.
The only thing about it that I'm a little iffy on, is that to get the list to

Hugo, do you use the $wgExtensionAssetsPath setting in your LocalSettings?
With this setting in use, I still had to create a symlink to the FCKEditor
directory, as I don't store extensions underneath /mediawiki/extension
For my users, I just added another button on the edit toolbar, which adds a
skeleton of an article to the editbox, so they can then flesh it out.
