There isn't really a route through manhattan when coming down 95... you just
pass through the bronx which is not interesting to you. Those roads are
also horribly congested.
Keeping in mind I live 6 miles from NYC via the george washington bridge, I
recommend:
1) Skip NYC all together. When

That is a good route through nyc. The Tappan Zee bridge is high enough to
give you one heck of a view. It is a view in itself! My 78 300cd I bought
in Queens died just before turning onto that bridge on the way home.
Surface streets are rough as hell and if traffic is heavy be prepared to
dodge
