My 300SDL transmission shifts very nicely thru all the gears, however, when
putting the car in gear originally from neutral it goes into gear rather
harsh, also, when I put the car into reverse; the same thing. Quite a
difference in shifting from the normal forward gears shifting on the go.

This started with you asking about the $34 GoForm tires this summer, right?
Is that what you bought?
Mitch.
I checked these guys previously. The best deal they have are on some Sumitomos,
but they only have a wear rating of like 320 for a little over $600.
If I go up to $720, I can get Hankooks with a 500 rating.
I believe both of these are Korean brands? Anyone have experience with either
one?
Just checked the idle speed; 6500/7000 at start up. The lurch is really in
the reverse gear, first gear is not very hard at all, just the reverse.
The reverse also takes a bit to engage, slower than first gear.

what is the normal idle speed? I will check again when it's warm. It
doesn't sound like a fast idle.

OE vs aftermarket on the front guide rod bushings where they attach to body?
I put the gold ones in on the teailing ends about seven years ago and the
right one failed after maybe two years with it rumbling in the floorboard
on rough pavement. Probably less than 20k miles on it before it went.
Usual.

I replaced these on a 123 and a 126, no problems with them but the cars
did not get a lot of miles after the RR, so can't share any experience
in that regard.
You might want to check all the suspension bits on that side, ball
joints, control arms, tie rods.

A common problem with the W123/126 front end is worn out upper
control arms. Only about 6 long, but if they are bad you get noise
and crooked front tracking, hence extreme tire wear.
Not that hard to replace.

I could only find it at Best Buy. Some local stereo installers had it, too,
but they wanted stupid money (more stupid than BB wanted) for it.
I think the box I bought to cover the inside of the SL hard top was around $80.
The stuff weighs a ton, so if you're buying it online best to find
I totally want one! Ā
