We call them "Idiot Lights" for a reason
Next time you are at the FLAPS, have a look for a charging indicator gage
that plugs into the cig lighter it will give you a real time output
reading... as I recall, they are pretty cheap...

If the light is on and goes out when you spin the alternator, that should mean
the alternator is supplying enough juice to power its own field. But if it
can't supply 13.4V against a full complement of cooling and HVAC fans, then
something's wrong.

Typically that means you have a bad diode or two (usually open) and are only
getting a few amps out of the alternator.
The idiot light just indicates that the battery is supplying the coil, not the
alternator.
Bad voltage regulator will do the same thing, plenty of amps maybe, but not
enough v

What we are missing is that the,whole world is not bottom feeders as is the
norm on this,list. My brother who spent 30 years in the,car business says
you can't pay too much for a GOOD used car. The market is clearly
motivated for classic Benzes.
