First jiggle on the gearshifter while starting. Next pull on the fan belt
and see if the crankpulley moves. If the first on doesn't work and the
pulley moves, offrer him $ 300 and get a new starter for half the profits.

Yes, I hope it's something like a neutral safety switch, or electrical. But
when the 240D I had purchased, and not gotten to use many times yet, showed
me the symptoms you describe, it was a siezed engine.
People told me to look for a broken timing chain and perhaps something

You should be able to turn the engine over with the power steering
pump pulley nut - to determine whether it's frozen. If not, the
neutral safety switch, starter, solenoid or ignition switch are
suspect. Jumping from the small wire terminal on the solenoid to the
big wire coming from the battery
