The old MB diesels got excellent milage at the expense of, well,
leisurely, performance -- meaning DON'T pull out in front of a heavy
truck. In todays market, that won't sell cars. Newer cars should

Did you look under the floor mats? Also, check for rust down in the
"pockets" next to the hood hinges; and if you have the opportunity, take off
the covers over the "boxes" to the rear of and under the front fenders and
check for rust. Those cars can have a "lot" of hidden rust.
