My current benz is a 1995 E320 and I have been pretty impressed with the design
and performance. What do I need to be
aware of on this car? How about auto tranny? Do they last longer on a
understressed diesel then on my way to powerflow gasser?
It seems like there is a whole generation
Mine has extension/retraction wheel - no tilt.

This car has been for sale for a while now. Might be a good car that
has only recently fallen on hard times, but it looks a pretty used up.

Remember my wife - pick of the litter rule? The only way to distract her
from the E320 would be to pull a late model Volvo Cross Country in the
driveway. My E320 has already had the wiring harness done, evap and a new
tranny. All but tranny by Benz dealer, under the first owner. This is a

The '87 is kind of an inflection point between old and new Mercedes
diesel car technology. It's old enough to have a purely mechanical
engine control system (before any of you pedants get after me,
that car has been for sale for a LONG time, so its probably a POS or
somebody would have bought it by now.

For the price, you might not get hurt too much. At 300k, it needs
new nozzles, a new timing chain and new chain guides. While you are
doing that, may was well put on a new tensioner and water
pump/thermostat. If they have evidence the PO replaced those within
100k or so, that is a plus.
All of what he said but also don't forget to make sure the head has
been upgraded to at least a # 17 and the cat converter in the engine
compartment has been replaced.
IOW, lots of issues!
