The 880 CCA group 49 that #1 boy needed for the w140 was coming in around $130.
He lacked the funds, so I pulled an old group 49 off the garage shelf. With
his alternator rebuilt, that battery has been working great for the past 6
months.

I bought a fair sized garden tractor battery at Walmart for $29.95 and
used it to test alternators in the shop. Since it was rated at (230
CCA?), I tried starting my '83 300D with it. Cranked it right up.

I believe that the smaller battery is fine for a gasoline car, and the
larger one is better suited for a Diesel car.

What does CCA mean?
Cold Cranking Amps is a rating used in the battery industry to define a

CA is measured at 0°C (cranking amps)
A 1000 CA battery is probably around 750-850 CCA.

The higher amp battery is probably for those who live in cold climates.
I have noticed that living in the south the batteries of the same
physical size have lower CCA ratings than the ones sold in the north lands.
