My 35 yo wagon has none of those problems and (because?) I drive it every
day.

So his mechanic offered him 700 and he took it.
The car had an sls issue on the left rear, a stall issue when accelerating
from stop, and a random gear selection issue. The drivers seat leather was
torn. It had sone scratches. Anyway sounded like a headache.

Not sure. He just wants to buy a new Volvo. I think he is thinking any
non-negative amount is a win. Will check.

I don't think anyone has asked.
How much does the person want for the car?

If the TCM has failed, it's probably from ATF wicking up the wires and into the
module. Sometimes it can be cleaned, sometimes it's fried.
In all cases, it needs a new connector at the transmission.
If I tried to drive it home as-is, I'm sure it would go into limp mode and stay
in 2nd gear
Sounds like the transmission control module is out. Or so he is being told.
The quote to fix it was 1250. He says the car moves fine but doesnt
reliably go into the gear you select. Seems like I have heard of this
failure before; perhaps there is a simple component swap to deal with it?
On Wed,
I can buy it from him. You send the truck. I will ask him for some photos
to make sure it is not all beat to hell.

Yes in LA.
Further questioning reveals a shifting issue; it doesnt always do what it
is told apparently.
Anyway seems like parting it out may be the best option for him.
