Others have chimed in with good advice, John. I would put my money on you
having dirty injectors. But obviously that's my shot in the twilight, so
don't take it as any sort of gospel.
One thing you *may* want to do is run through a tin of Diesel Purge, though
I don't think anyone has yet
My 83 240D (235K) after idling poorly for a month is now running on 3 cylinders.

Tired rings, floating rings, broken rings, holed piston.
Holed Piston!!? How could that happen?
How do I do a compression test on this engine?
Start the car, and let her idle. Take a 17mm wrench and open the lines to the
injectors. When you crack a line and the idle doesn't get any

Relax, this is the worst case answer. But to address your question, usually
due to long-term poor injector spray pattern.
How do I do a compression test on this engine?
Remove the injectors and screw in a diesel compression
Have you checked the compression on the offending cylinder? Swapped
injectors around?

Here are some answers:
If your engine won't idle, it sounds to me like you have a general fuel
system problem, not just one bad injector.
Does the engine run as though it has a dead cylinder at all rpm ranges, and
under load, or just while idling?
It seems to run on all 4 cylinders at

No, What size socket do I need to remove the injecter?
and No.I don't have a Diesel compression tester.
How much would a matched set of new or rebuilt
