Subject: Re: [MBZ] 300E W124
I see a lot of W124 300E's needing transmission work - I *really* like
the 300 W124 and nice D's are getting harder harder to find.
Is the W124 prone to tranny problems? Is it usually the B2 valve?
Any good websites to learn about the W124 300E?
Thx

Hi Larry,
My trans has always had a very slow leak, and I didn't feel it worth pulling
it all out unless there were other things to do, while in there. Other
than that, 350,000+ kms, and it all original. The car has never been
abused, by me or the previous owner, but all seems ok so far. No
Well, I wouldn't go quite that far - I found that RR'ing the alternator was
much more difficult in the 300E than the 300D. They really did hide the belt
tension adjustment! The fan shroud is two pieces that bayonet together so
you can got to the belt, etc. without pulling the radiator first. I
There is more room between the radiator and fan with an M103 than an
OM 603 in the W124 (I have done both).
You want tight fit, try a 190E 2.6L!
Anyway, I do wish that Benz had used the OM603 tensioner on the M103

I have also done both, and think the M103 has less room - but then it's been
a couple of years since I worked on the OM603 in the 124 - memory isn't what
it used to be, probalby needs a defrag.
I agree on the tensioner! The front of the M103 seems more crowded, like
there's more stuff there. All
Larry is used to changing plugs in a 911, he'll feel like he can stand in
the bay while working on a M103. ;-) lol
