Put the new one on and leak is gone. Now I need to wait until some
numbskull
causes me to stop on the proverbial dime and we'll see if the low idle
problem has been corrected.
Why do you need an extra a-hole around to conduct this test?
(The one you're equipped with should be sufficient! :-)
Replace the pump, then see what it does.

Replace the primer pump, its leaking and allowing air in. Eventually
it won't start.

My 78 240D primer pump used a 3/4" or 7/8" wrench to R&R - that's one of my
few SAE wrenches but it comes in handy very often -
