I go one small step further and run the engine with water only for cooling
until I'm sure it's OK. Any internal or external leaks can be fixed without
a big mess or antifreeze getting into the engine.
Did you vacuum the head and cylinders while under assembly?
so there!

Back in my MB engine rebuilding days I would 'spin' the engine over,
with no ignition, until the oil pressure showed up on the oil pressure
gauge. Then I would fire it up.

Did ya change the cam? followers? lifters?
If ya did then use some of the cam lube. It is a high pressure lube that
keeps stuff from galling up until your lube system starts to work properly.
When I had my machine shop I sold lots of cams and lifters cuz people were
too cheep to spend a couple
Forgot to tell you that I mixed it 50/50 with engine oil

Dave, use something like STP on the bearing surfaces..

You might just spin the engine with the starter before installing the
injectors. Have someone see to the manual shutoff lever on the IP
during this exercise or tie it down. Continue for a few secs after
the gauge stabilizes. I've always done this with or without assembly
lube, leaving the spark
I just put ample amounts of synthetic oil everywhere.

I've always coated my cam lobes with engine assembly grease for
startups, just for extra lube insurance--theoretically it sticks
around a bit longer than engine oil, but that's debatable.
