That puzzles me, that it did work before, poorly, but now with one change
(bushings) it doesn't work.

I am uneducated on just how it all is mated. From screwing around with it I
know that I can fire off the engine and get it running. It will stay running
as long as it is in Park or Neutral. Torque converter must sort of be spinning
around slowly, maybe? Parking pawl was not engaging prior to
In my mind's eye, I see the bands thing, but do not know enough about how the
transmission works for that to take place. The PO spent a few hundred $$ last
summer dealing with a problem shift issue. Maybe the dork at the shop adjusted
things to even out the shift, but did not install the shift
No car, just the OM615 mated to a manny trans. No pedals or plumbing to be had

You're right, the TC is in series with the whole mess.
No way the car should be able to stall out unless the
TC is misbehaving, or the engine is running like total
crap.
A TC dragging inside enough to kill the engine is
probably filling the tranny with shavings. I'd swap
them both out.

There are two sources of stall torque I can think of within
the AT: 1) The TC's stator is just that: static, so if the
TC's vanes are dragging on it that'd do it. 2) The internal
clutch packs/bands are receiving conflicting demands,

That is easy. When you pull the parts and pedals, take out the short
piece of tubing and the hose. Plumbing done. The master cyl comes
out with the pedals.

So, the TC is toast in your description. That sort of makes sense. Still
would need to remove the trans to install a fresh TC.

Local tranny from PnP is in the $99 range. I am assuming any trans from the
1975-1979 era benz will work. 722.1xx or is it .0xx? Either way, I am not
well versed on why the trans is producing more torque than the engine can
defeat. If I had a clean room, I would gladly do a rebuild with a k
The whole theory of the car is that it will be entered in the 24 hours of
LeMons race next year. My budget is limited by their rules that getting it
running and purchase price can not exceed $500. I am scouring Freecycle and
the freebie section of CL for all I can repurpose to get it going. T

I would call a transmission shop, it's not possible to for the
transmission to lock up and stall the engine, it has to be a bad
converter. Worst case a locked up tranny would simply never let then
engine get much above idle, but it can only stall if the torque
converter is locked, not the
There is a guy on the BenzWorld W140 forum that is essentially self-taught on
722.xx transmissions. He claims that they’re no more difficult to rebuild than
a domestic slushbox.

A factory rebuild is worth more than the car.
Expect a local shop would charge similar.

It all depends on what you intend to do with the car - - is it A: a long
term keeper/driver, or B: just a winter beater?
If A, get a rebuilt tranny, or if you are adventurous, do the many
conversion.
If B, get a junk yard tranny and hope . . .
