There has been a lot of discussion in the past about the poor quality of
rebuilt rear half axles for the W123 series. I am now facing the task of
replacing both rear halves on my 85 300TD Wagon. Until I am able to locate
a good used set, there a stop gap measure? Is there a silicone or rubber

(not sure if that was a good price or not) and have to replace mine

If its only the boots gone bad, replace the boots now. Your axles will
likely run on for a long time if the boots are on ly starting to go and the
axles are not badly worn. Otherwise, try to find axles from a junker, and
it may be worthwhile to put new boots on them while they are out.

I'll second and third the motion to get a used original from a recycler. When
I needed one, my Indie was able to procure a used one for $125; still going
strong about 30k miles later, and I expect it will last another 100k miles at
least.
